Cebu towns compete for different cooking challenges from November 16 to 19, 2017, at the Cebu Provincial Capitol for the 2017 “Eats Meets West”. It is an annual cooking event organized by the Provincial Tourism Office in its 2nd year.

Cebu Provincial Capitol to showcase food from different towns

The town of Tuburan will play host for the grand opening of the said event on November 16 where they will also present their homegrown coffee. Cebu Governor Hilario Davide III and Vice Governor Agnes Magpale are expected to attend the said opening program.

A whole-day “Food Forum” will be held at the Capitol Social Hall on November 17, with seven experts taking on topics like the ancient diets of Cebuanos, what Cebuano cooking really is, healing with food, organic farming, and design for food. Dr. Ame Garong of the National Museum, Mike “Chef Tatung” Sarthou, Teresa Ruelas, Eleonor Rivera, Vince Cinches, Cristino Villamor, and Manila’s Ige Ramos have lined up as speakers this forum that open to the general public

The “Food Festival” will also begin on November 17. The public is encouraged to buy from the different stalls located at the back of the main Capitol building. There are prepared food and specialties from Cebu towns that everyone can purchase and sample to experience Cebuano delicacies. The Food Festival is open from 8 AM to 8 PM and would last until the closing day on November 19.

Towns battles for Cebuano cooking supremacy

The culinary competition, on the other hand, will take place on November 18-19 and participants from Cebu town competing for the honor to be adjudged as having the best appetizer, welcome drink, dessert, main course, welcome lei, table set-up, and packaging.

The participants will also battle to come up with the best interpretation of a Cebuano recipe from a 1923 cookbook of Maria “Señora Inday” Fadullon Rallos.

The “Eats Meets West” program is the output of the Cebu Community-based Ecotourism Project of the Provincial Government that was started in 2015. The intention of holding the event is to help develop authenticity and pride of place highlighting the value of local cuisine in Cebu.
