Shake, Rattle, and Roll horror films that give us body shivers

There is no place like home as they say. Well, this is definitely true as we fail not to look back to our roots. No matter how far we’ve reached, we always turn our heads and drive back to the loving corners of our home. This adage applies the same way to horror films, which is one of our favorite movie genres to watch.

Shake, Rattle, and Roll: The ultimate Filipino horror films

We have featured several foreign movies in the past yet an indescribable sense of accomplishment is felt when serving our very own home-cooked films.

To start with, let us be reminded of the time when we were kids – naive and susceptible. And what better way to refresh these childlike traits but to pull memories that made us shiver, cry and most of the time put us to bed at night. Yes, you’re right, I am talking about horror films. These films easily seeped through our innocent minds because the younger version of ourselves processes everything perceived to be true as true.

Below is my list of horror stories courtesy of Regal Films – Shake, Rattle, and Roll series.

Shake, Rattle & Roll (1984) – “MANANANGGAL”

This is the last story of the first-ever Shake, Rattle, and Roll movie. By far the most suspenseful episode of all the series. Douglas (Herbert Bautista) is a teenage boy assigned to kill the manananggal lurking in their barangay. A manananggal is a mythical creature in the Philippines that is believed to devour humans for food. Their characteristic includes separating the upper half of the body and sprouting wings to hunt for food while hiding the lower body until its safe return.

Shake, Rattle & Roll II (1990) – “ASWANG”

The third story in the second series of the Shake, Rattle and Roll movie. Featuring Manilyn Reynes as Portia, a city girl who went with her friends to a remote province to celebrate barrio fiesta. Little did she had known that she will be offered as a sacrifice. The salt scene to discover the ‘aswang’ is perfectly tattooed in my mind as of this day.

Shake, Rattle & Roll III (1991) – “NANAY”

Manilyn Reynes once again played in the 3rd installment of the film series. This time a vengeful creature of the sea tries to kill Maloy (Manilyn Reynes) and her friends when they unintentionally disturbed the undin‘s habitat causing the loss of some of the Undin‘s eggs.

Shake, Rattle & Roll VI (1997) – “TELEVISION”

All family has its story to tell. Jen (Camille Prats) is a girl viewed by everyone to have everything she needs – a big comfortable house, luxurious toys, and a loving family. But this is not how Jen sees her life. With all she has, she felt neglected and found her happiness in front of the TV. But everything changes when the only outlet for her happiness became the source of her nightmare.

Shake, Rattle and Roll XII (2010) – ‘MAMANYIKA”

Shaina Magdayao played the loving elder sister, Anna, in this film. Following the loss of their mother, she steps up to be the mother figure of her little sibling, Abigail. On their way home after the burial, Abigail found a ragged doll imbued with their mother’s spirit.

What better way to celebrate the coming holiday than to have a concoction of “classic” horror films in the dark alley of your bedroom while the sound of terror and screaming slowly creeps in the insides. Enjoy and watch at your own risk.
