Cebuano Artist Shines in Scott Kelby Worldwide Photo Walk
The Scott Kelby Worldwide Photo Walk is celebrated as one of the largest photography competitions globally, drawing thousands of creative minds. Salvador “Butch” Toong III, a Cebuano photographer, secured the top spot with a captivating image taken at Cebu City Hall. Announced on November 27 during The Grid podcast by Scott Kelby himself, this victory came after nearly a decade of participation.
Initially skeptical when a friend informed him of his win, Toong only accepted the news upon seeing Kelby’s official announcement.
The Story Behind the Scott Kelby Photo
Toong’s photo stands out not just for its composition but its narrative depth. Captured near Cebu City Hall, the image features a woman holding a rainbow-colored umbrella, symbolizing hope amidst chaos.
“There’s a deep message behind the photo. At present, there is conflict inside the city hall,” the photographer said in Cebuano with Rappler. Despite the struggles within places of authority, he believes that a “rainbow of hope” can emerge, bringing light even in the darkest moments.
This inspiring imagery resonated with judges and audiences alike, solidifying its place as the contest’s winner.
A Journey of Passion and Sacrifice
Toong’s success is a testament to his dedication to the craft. Over 15 years ago, he sold his family car to buy his first camera—a decision made in consultation with his wife. This pivotal moment fueled his career, leading to achievements in wedding photography and educational seminars for aspiring photographers.
“If you are passionate about something, you don’t need to think about the gear…as long as you are passionate, you will succeed,” Toong emphasized.
A Legacy of Excellence
This isn’t Toong’s first brush with recognition. He is a Hall of Fame awardee in the Photographers Club of Cebu and earned the Photographer of the Year title from 2017 to 2019. His talents also gained international attention as a finalist in the 2014 Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Award (HIPA).
With his Scott Kelby contest win, Toong cements his reputation as one of Cebu’s most inspiring photographers.
