Globe leads connectivity drive for remote communities
Expanding internet access to underserved regions remains a challenge in the Philippines. Globe, a leading telecommunications provider, is stepping up to champion Remote Connectivity Expansion through collaboration with industry partners and government agencies.
Globe pushes collaborative efforts to boost digital access in isolated areas
By sharing resources and avoiding redundant efforts, Globe aims to make digital inclusivity a reality for all Filipinos.
A Unified Approach for Better Connectivity
In a recent media briefing, Carlo Puno, Globe’s Chief Financial Officer and Chief Risk Officer, emphasized the need for a unified approach.
“It should be a rollout that is maximizing the current footprint of the different players, potentially leveraging the towercos’ presence in certain areas and avoiding duplication of efforts in any of the mobile network operators,” said Puno.
Globe aims to harness existing infrastructure and collaborate with telcos, government bodies, and tower operators to optimize service delivery in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs).
Government and Private Sector Partnerships
To address connectivity gaps, the Connectivity Plan Task Force (CPTF) proposed new towers for remote regions. This plan, supported by Globe’s leadership, aligns with the Marcos administration’s vision of a Digital Philippines. Currently, over 7,000 barangays are classified as GIDAs, with approximately 25 million people lacking reliable internet access.
Increasing Access with Strategic Infrastructure
Globe has established more than 600 sites in GIDA locations to date, demonstrating a solid commitment to the government’s digital goals. By working together with tower companies and other industry players, the aim is to strategically expand infrastructure, reducing costs and avoiding duplication. This cooperative model is expected to foster faster and more sustainable development.
Supporting the Digital Philippines Vision
Globe and other telcos have committed to providing SIM cards with data plans to unconnected households via a government subsidy program starting this year. This initiative runs until 2028 and is expected to make a significant impact on connectivity in rural areas. By focusing on areas that lack life-enabling connectivity, Globe is ensuring that every Filipino has the chance to participate in the digital economy.
Globe Emphasizing Collaboration Over Competition
Carlo Puno highlighted the importance of cooperation in this ambitious rollout: “I think if we’re able to do that, we will be able to support the government and bridge that digital divide. But it has to be more [of] a conversation in the industry rather than just one player like Globe rolling out.”
This sentiment echoes Globe’s desire for a collaborative future where every player in the telecom industry contributes to nationwide connectivity.
