Malacañang declares August 23 a Special (Non-Working) Holiday
Filipinos can look forward to a four-day long weekend this August! President Bongbong Marcos has officially moved Ninoy Aquino Day from Wednesday, August 21, 2024, to Friday, August 23, 2024, giving everyone a longer break to enjoy. This decision was made through the signing of Proclamation No. 665, which designates August 23, 2024, as a special non-working holiday across the entire country.
Extended Weekend as August 23 Declared a Special (Non-Working) Holiday in the Philippines
The Presidential Communications Office shared the news on Thursday, August 15, via social media, highlighting the government’s intent to promote domestic tourism through this adjustment. According to Proclamation No. 665, the shift from Wednesday to Friday is designed to provide a longer weekend for Filipinos.
“In order to provide for a longer weekend thereby promoting domestic tourism, the celebration of Ninoy Aquino Day may be moved from 21 August 2024 (Wednesday) to 23 August 2024 (Friday),” Malacañang explained in the official announcement.
Originally, the upcoming holiday was set to create a three-day long weekend, with National Heroes Day being observed on Monday, August 26, 2024. However, this adjustment now allows for an extended four-day break, making it a perfect opportunity for travel, relaxation, or spending quality time with loved ones.
While this move aims to boost local tourism and provide a well-deserved break for Filipinos, Malacañang reminded the public that the historical significance of Ninoy Aquino Day should not be overlooked. The holiday, which commemorates the assassination of Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. in 1983, remains an important part of the nation’s history.
