SM Supermalls is gearing up for an exclusive and groundbreaking launch with the opening of SM City JMall in Mandaue City on October 25, 2024. The retail giant is set to introduce a new concept, marking its fifth major shopping center in Cebu.
SM City JMall to open soon in Cebu
The announcement was made by Steven Tan, President of SM Supermalls, during his visit to Cebu to inaugurate the newly-opened Food Hall on the third level of SM City Cebu. “SM City JMall is a little bit different because it’s a well-curated mall. We handpicked tenants to tweak concepts to make it more special and different,” Tan stated in an interview, emphasizing the exclusive nature of the mall’s offerings.
SM City JMall stands on what was once the JCentre Mall, which SM Supermalls acquired from Cebuano businessman Justin Uy, known as the “Mango King.” The acquisition was finalized in early 2023, and JCentre Mall officially closed its doors on January 31, 2023, to pave the way for SM’s redevelopment efforts.
Tan assured that SM City JMall offers something unique, considering its smaller footprint compared to other prominent SM malls like SM City Cebu and SM Seaside City Cebu. The new shopping center is designed to deliver a more intimate and tailored experience to Cebu’s retail market.
One of the highlights of the new mall will be the introduction of an Izakaya Row, a feature that blends traditional Japanese dining with Cebu’s bustling atmosphere. “There’s even an Izakaya Row,” Tan revealed, adding to the excitement surrounding this project. An Izakaya is a popular Japanese bar concept where patrons can enjoy alcoholic drinks accompanied by a variety of snacks and small dishes, making it a perfect addition for food and culture enthusiasts.
Retail Evolution in the Digital Age
Despite the rise of online shopping, which has changed the retail landscape globally, Tan remains optimistic about the future of brick-and-mortar stores in the Philippines. “You cannot replicate the human interaction online,” Tan remarked, highlighting SM’s dedication to delivering experiential shopping experiences.
SM Supermalls is capitalizing on this concept by blending both online and offline retail strategies. “In SM, we have SM Malls Online which is currently [available] in Manila. We give the customers the choice,” Tan explained. The ability to bridge both online convenience and in-person experience is a strategy that positions SM Supermalls at the forefront of the retail industry.
The opening of SM City JMall is just one part of SM’s grand plan for Cebu. While new malls may not be on the immediate horizon, ongoing redevelopment projects, such as the upgrade of SM City Cebu, will be completed by 2025. With the introduction of new retail concepts and brands, Cebu’s retail sector is set to undergo a major transformation.
Tan also emphasized the importance of supporting local brands and their potential to compete globally. “We have a lot of Filipino products that can compete globally,” he said, signaling SM’s commitment to promoting homegrown talent alongside international brands.
