MCIA Flies Green: A Commitment to Sustainability

MCIA was recently recognized by the Airports Council International (ACI), an organization for airports across Asia-Pacific and the Middle East. The airport received the Platinum Green Airport Recognition 2024, becoming the first in the Philippines to achieve this distinction.

This year’s award focused on airports that promote “Biodiversity and Nature-Based Solutions,” highlighting the importance of protecting local ecosystems. MCIA, operated by Aboitiz InfraCapital, impressed the judges in the 8-to-15 million passenger category, beating out strong contenders like King Fahd International Airport in Saudi Arabia (Gold) and Chubu Centrair International Airport in Japan (Silver).

Sustainable Solutions for a Greener Future

MCIA’s commitment to sustainability goes beyond awards. The airport actively works to minimize its environmental impact through the use of solar energy and by creating green spaces within the terminal. This dedication to eco-friendly practices not only benefits the environment, but also contributes to a more pleasant experience for passengers.

“Airports play a significant role in reducing carbon emissions,” said Athanasios Titonis, CEO of Aboitiz InfraCapital. MCIA, as the Philippines’ second-largest airport, takes this responsibility seriously. We implement operational measures that directly reduce our carbon footprint.”

A History of Green Achievements

This Platinum award adds to MCIA’s growing list of environmental accomplishments. Earlier this year, it became the first Philippine airport to receive Level 1 Airport Carbon Accreditation from ACI, recognizing its efforts in managing carbon emissions. Additionally, MCIA underwent a recent renovation that resulted in a visually stunning terminal while prioritizing eco-friendly practices.

ACI: Recognizing Leaders in Sustainability

The ACI Green Airports Recognition program aims to promote best practices that minimize the aviation industry’s environmental impact. The program recognizes airports that go above and beyond in their sustainability efforts, inspiring others to follow suit. Past awards have highlighted initiatives like eliminating single-use plastics, waste reduction, and energy-efficient infrastructure.

MCIA’s Platinum Green Airport Recognition is a testament to its dedication to environmental stewardship. By prioritizing sustainability, MCIA ensures a greener future for air travel and the beautiful Visayas region.
