Globe keeps employees engaged while working remotely

Working from home requires the right balance between work and personal life. This prompted Globe Telecom to ensure that over 8,000 of its employees remain engaged even when they do not meet each other face-to-face.

Since working remotely is a new setup which many people only tried when the Enhanced Community Quarantine took effect last March, Globe deemed it is necessary for the company to provide as many opportunities as possible for its employees to stay motivated and productive while ensuring that both their mental and physical health are taken care of.

“With the majority of our workforce being spread out, it is easy to feel isolated, lonely, and anxious. Morale may sink and they may lack a sense of belonging. Even when at home, Globe employees work as hard or even harder than when they were in the office,” said Renato Jiao, Globe Chief Human Resource Officer. “So we encourage them to take a break through fun and educational podcasts, physical activities with fitness coaches through Zoom and Workplace by Facebook, well-being webinars, and a lot more. We may be physically distant from each other but we keep ourselves virtually connected.”

Aside from company-led activities, the leaders themselves spend time with the employees by sharing company updates, tips, and personal stories. Groups within Globe are also empowered to conduct their own teaming sessions to maintain positivity among the members.

Some of the activities Globe prepared for its employees.

The Globe Store family in Trinoma, for instance, makes it a point to elevate each other’s mood through games, online contests, and activities especially during the first few weeks of ECQ. The team collectively agrees that these activities helped them to remain sharp and ready to deliver when they reported back to the store last May 30.

“Nung nag start yung ECQ, naging concern sa amin yung mental health ng isa’t isa, like depression and anxiety. Inisip namin, paano na kami ngayon na nasa bahay nalang, at wala sa loob ng Globe Store. Hindi naman po pwede na puro huddle-huddle nalang. Kaya po kami nagpapa-activity at mga games para po kahit dito lang sa Zoom para mawala yung mga negative thoughts at maging magkakasama po kami,” said Jaraa Bianca Lumaguip, Globe Retail Specialist.

Recognizing the importance of mental and physical wellness, Globe also regularly holds online seminars and discussions on various topics, ranging from home workouts, stress-busting, healthy home-cooked meals, to staying positive in isolation. It also lets employees virtually bond with each other through quiz nights, emoji games, trivia, jamming sessions, and more, all through The Good Vibes Club podcasts. Some of the podcast attendees even volunteered to host future podcast sessions.

Outside the podcast, Globe also engaged employees through music and arts, with the Sining Galing Art Contest that called on employees to submit artwork, both from them and their families. This initiative helped employees, especially those from the critical skeleton force, to distract themselves during the pandemic through a healthy creative outlet. Winning works will have the chance to be featured in a digital and physical art gallery.

For mental wellbeing, Globe partnered with MindNation where employees, not only of Globe but also of its affiliates and subsidiaries, can request therapy sessions from psychologists to help alleviate isolation and anxiety. This is done through video or call.

Employees can call KonsultaMD’s telehealth hotline anytime they want to or get assistance from Maxicare for both mental and physical health concerns. AC Health is also open to all Ayala Group employees and families, for COVID-19 inquiries. It can also provide online consultation with a Nutritionist.

Globe also does not take for granted the professional growth of its workforce and has made available online courses and soft skills through Globe University and Skillsoft. It also invited speakers such as Simon Sinek to continue inspiring the employees to live out their purpose.

Likewise, Globe has created a program that provides each employee with an opportunity to engage in short stints outside of their functional role to create an environment of continuous development through an immersive learning experience.
