After a month of soft opening at the Pocket Garden of Ayala Center Active Zone area, StreetFood by Sugbo Mercado had its formal launch on Valentine’s Day to provide a venue where Cebuano street food was celebrated and was culminated to be introduced to local street food lovers both Cebuanos and the tourists from all over the world. The area was chosen by the Sugbo Mercado Food Group because of its easy accessibility for shoppers and pedestrians going into and out of Ayala Center Cebu.
Street food is an institution in Cebu City with its historical background influenced by a diverse culture of Chinese, Spanish, and other parts of Asia. Cebuanos, being hospitable and welcoming, food became a connective tissue to introduce history and culture. With an added creative mind, today’s street food is an elevated version of those being prepared years ago adding a modern twist to satisfy the taste of the new generation.
Asa ta mangaon?
It’s long been gone when the difficulties of answering the very tedious question, “Asa ta mangaon?” (“Where to eat?”) Sugbo Mercado’s presence has become one of the prominent replies of many Cebuanos. Dragging their family and friends along to different locations of Sugbo Mercado around the city, even tourists are now properly introduced and naming Sugbo Mercado as “Cebu’s craziest street food market ever!”
